Gateway Drive Public School is located in the West Family of Schools in Guelph. It is located near the intersection of Gateway Drive and Fife Road. Gateway Drive School is a middle sized school with a population of approximately 300 students. The school was originally built in 1980 as a K to Gr. 6, but renovated to create a beautiful K to Gr. 8 school with no portables. The majority of our students walk to school with the exception of approximately 40 students who are bused from the rural area just west and north of the school.
Gateway is proud of the many engaging programs offered. Staff and students alike appreciate state of the art educational technology that is available including: Smart Boards, data projectors coupled with staff laptop computers, document cameras, student run video announcements and monthly celebration slide shows highlighting students working and having fun. Our computer lab is housed in the Resource Centre/Library. This lab supports our Science and Technology programs with our Primary, Junior and Intermediate students.
There are many other programs offered to create a safe and inclusive learning environment. We have an active sports program offering team opportunities for Intermediate students and intramural sports for Juniors. Our Gr. 7 and 8 students run the intramural program as a leadership opportunity.
Our Amnesty Club is open to students from Grades 4 to 8. This active group learns about global issues and plans actions to make the world a better place.
Bi-weekly, we offer a Boys Club and Girls Club. Students enjoy a variety of activities such as interactive shared reading, board games, co-operative games in the gym, computer time, cooking or baking, while they build connections with staff and other students.
We are especially proud of our music programs. School Council manages our school orchestra through the leadership of Mr. Trevor Dick of Flying Bow. This year’s intermediates will be the first group to benefit from our new Instrumental Music program. All Gr. 7 and 8 students will have an opportunity to learn to play one of the following: clarinet, flute, trumpet, sax, trombone, bass guitar or percussion instruments.
Breakfast Club, Healthy Snack, Milk program , Friday Pizza lunch, Lunch Lady are the food programs that are currently in place at Gateway. Breakfast Club is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday am at 8:00 to 8:20 and all students are welcome. Our Healthy Snack program is run through School Council and provides healthy snack alternatives for every student on Tuesday mornings. This program gives students a chance to taste a variety of snacks they might not otherwise try at home.
