ESL and LINC Classes

11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

We offer many different levels of classes from ESL literacy to Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 9. All classes study speaking, listening, reading, grammar and writing. A language test determines the level of class at which the learners begin to study.  Instructors give feedback on progress at the end of term.  Learners can register for the morning class or the afternoon class, or both classes. 

September to June

A multi-level class (Literacy to CLB 6) in which you study listening, speaking, reading, grammar and writing. A language test is required before starting. Instructors give feedback on progress at the end of term.

 

September to August

Night Classes
Monday and Wednesday nights
6:45 p.m. to 9:15 p.m.
We offer multi-level classes from ESL Literacy to CLB 9. All classes study speaking, listening, grammar, reading and writing. A language test determines the level of class in which the learners begin to study. Instructors give feedback on progress at the end of the term.

Conversation and Pronunciation

This course for intermediate and advanced learners reviews essential knowledge about correct English pronunciation. It also gives learners a chance to practice English to increase confidence.

Canadian Idioms and Expressions

CLB 3 (completed) to CLB 8

This new course will improve understanding of common Canadian idioms and expressions used in conversation and the media. Learners will develop listening comprehension skills, increase understanding of the meaning of idioms and expressions, and practice using them in conversation and role play.

English Language & Computer Skills for Administrative Occupations – Part 1

CLB 4 (completed) to CLB 8

In Part 1 learners will focus on English language skills for the workplace. Language instruction will include small talk, greeting guests and co-workers, and basic office vocabulary.
Instruction will also focus on writing simple correspondence such as notes, memos, formal letters, and emails. Learners will learn basic computer skills (Windows operating system, email etiquette, research using the Internet) and terminology. Learners will learn to correctly format business letters (letterhead, margins, etc), using basic Word.

English Language Skills for Healthcare Workers – Part 1 NEW

An introductory class for those thinking about employment in the Healthcare sector. This course will focus on English language communication skills needed to work effectively in this sector such as interacting with clients, getting information about client needs, responding to requests for information and communicating instructions for care.


English Language Skills for Engineering

CLB 5 (completed) to CLB 8.

For those with international qualifications in engineering and engineering technology, or currently studying in this field, or planning a career in the engineering field, this course will assist you in preparing your English language skills for a career in engineering in Canada. Using vocabulary and examples from the fields of engineering, science and technology, this course will improve reading and writing skills as well as listening and speaking skills relevant to the sector.

The TESL Ontario accredited instructor has a degree in engineering and has work experience in chemical technology and food engineering.

Preparation for IELTS and TOEFL: Listening and Speaking Skills

CLB 5 (completed) to CLB 8.

This 8-week class will develop the listening and speaking skills needed for success in IELTS and TOEFL.

Learners will review and practice test taking strategies and language skills for the listening and speaking components of IELTS and TOEFL in a computerized language lab under simulated test conditions.

Preparation for IELTS and TOEFL: Reading and Writing Skills

CLB 5 (completed) to CLB 8.

This 8–week class will develop the skills and confidence needed for success in IELTS and TOEFL.

Learners will review and practice test taking strategies and language skills for the reading and writing components of IELTS and TOEFL in a computerized language lab under simulated test conditions.

The class also features individualized writing support. 

Sentence Structure and Grammar – Part 1

Each week of this 8-week course will focus on a different aspect of grammar that is crucial for creating English sentences correctly. Some of the grammar points which will be reviewed are verb forms and tenses, conjunctions, the use of active and passive voice, and transitions.

This 8-week course will help those who wish to improve their writing skills for study or for work. Building on the knowledge of the essay form gained in Part 1, learners will learn how to write different types of essays including research essays.

Working With Your Accent

CLB 4 (completed) to CLB 8

This 8-week course is designed for people who are comfortable expressing themselves in English, but feel that their pronunciation needs improvement. Pronunciation rules will be reviewed and learners will be given exercises and suggestions to improve their pronunciation.

Saturday courses which may be offered from September to June

Citizenship Class

CLB 3 (completed) to CLB 8
Saturdays 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon
Course (10 classes) starts three times per year in January, April and September. Contact office for the next start date

This course will give help you to prepare for your Canadian citizenship test.

Pronunciation & Advanced Listening Comprehension
